QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT MARK 15:34: MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?

Mark 15:34
And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?”, which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

If Jesus is one of the Trinity, why does he feel abandoned by God at that moment, with whom he is one?

The words spoken by Jesus on the cross do not mean that he felt abandoned by the Father, with whom he is one (John 10:30). Those words are taken from Psalm 21, with which Jesus, in his humanity, expresses both the suffering of his passion and the conviction of his resurrection. It is not only a lament of anguish, but also a real prayer of hope in the final triumph. Jesus, true God and true man in the unity of the divine Second Person of the Trinity, had to experience all the anguish and suffering of death in his human nature. But as a divine person he could not feel abandoned by the Father with whom he is one God.
